Changing the designation of an account

Can I change the category of a debt? For example, Mint.com shows a home equity line of credit as a credit card debt instead of a loan. How do I change it to show as a loan?

Same here. I've got the exact same thing -- a line of credit showing as a credit card. It is sort of a credit card, but is really a loan. Also I've got an RSP loan classified as money in the bank! I wish!

This is reallly frustrating! I don't want my home equity line to show as a credit card! I hope that this can get fixed so things will be more accurate!

Hi Mint.com, I hope you are listening. This is a big problem. If not fixed, Mint.com is not very useful for me!

I hit the same problem. It would be nice if you would change the designation.

Heads up to all still having this problem... just send Mint.com a customer service message detailing exactly which account you would like reassigned.

They will promptly reassign it for you. In the future it would be great if we could change this ourselves, but for the time being your solution is one quick email away.

    Best of luck!

I just tried to change a home equity line of credit from a credit card to a loan through customer service.

It doesn't look like it's possible right now:

    Thank you for contacting Mint.

I wanted to acknowledge your report of your HELOC account being classified as a credit card account. OFX standards consider HELOCs a credit accounts (OFX, or Open Financial Exchange, is a data-stream format for exchanging financial information) -- and many people would agree it is, however, just as many view it as a loan account.

While this would appear to be an easy problem to address, aside from the different viewpoints mentioned above, reclassifying would require that our data provider change their master mapping . Which can be done, but a better solution would be to give users the ability to change accounts from one type to the other based on their preference - a project that would take some time to implement. Another issue we have to solve for is that we currently only show transaction history for credit accounts but not loan accounts. If we change the classification of existing HELOC accounts from credit to loans then we will need to build in the capability to show transaction history for loans too.

We apologize for any inconvenience this classification issue causes in the meantime, but do know that this is an issue that’s on our radar that we hope to have a solution for in the near future.

Thank you for using Mint and have a nice day!

    Ongoing debate, see here:
    http://satisfaction.mint.com/mint/top...

Bottom line is I have the same problem. So does 1216 other people according to the thread. They are working on it but it is actually a difficult solution. Its not just a matter of chaning a text category field but completely changes the behavior of the account. Just recently I have noticed that loan accounts are starting to track transactions. This may be a step in that direction. If you do not understand what I am taling about, read the thread above. This issue has been long in the works.

ldgtampa - your reponse is a bit extreme. Really? All the features Mint has and you refuse the product because your HELOC is classified as a credit card. You have bigger issues. Fair well.

  • Hi all,

We apologize for the inconvenience this may be causing, but this is actually a known issue about HELOC accounts being classified as a credit card account.

While this would appear to be an easy problem to address, reclassifying would require that our data provider change their master mapping, which can be done, but a better solution would be to give users the ability to change accounts from one type to the other based on their preference – a project that would take some time to implement.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience, but note that this is an issue that’s on our radar that we hope to have a solution for in the near future.
